The records indicate the quantity of the Levites and specify the thousands assigned to oversee the construction of the temple, those designated to teach and interpret the law, the number set apart as doorkeepers to protect the temple entrances, and those chosen to offer songs of praise to the Lord of all (1 Chronicles 23:3-5).

The book of Chronicles outlines the count of the Levites as well as the various roles they were assigned by David. It notes that the descendants of Moses were assembled for this task, with Zadok, the high priest, being a descendant of Eleazar, and Abimelech coming from Ithamar. Due to their larger number, the descendants of Eleazar were given two divisions in the service of God, while the descendants of Ithamar received one. Luke also references this lineage in his Gospel, mentioning that Zechariah was from the line of Abijah (Luke 1:5). This Abijah is noted in the Chronicles as belonging to the seventh generation.
