And David said to Solomon his son: Act like a man, and take courage, and do: fear not, and be not dismayed: for the Lord my God will be with thee, and will not leave thee, nor forsake thee, till thou hast finished all the work for the service of the house of the Lord.

However, David placed a condition on his promise of God's protection for Solomon. He stated, ‘He will not depart from thee, nor forsake thee, till thou hast accomplished all the work of the house of the Lord.’ While Solomon was engaged in the construction, he remained faithful and experienced the Lord's divine support; yet once the temple was finished, he strayed into wrongdoing and lost that same divine protection.
