The Church Fathers on this verse

1 Chronicles 29:2Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And I with all my ability have prepared the expenses for the house of my God. Gold for vessels of gold, and silver for vessels of silver, brass for things of brass, iron for things of iron, wood for things of wood: and onyx stones, and stones like alabaster, and of divers colours, and all manner of precious stones, and marble of Paros in great abundance.

The Book of Chronicles illuminates the hues of the stones that comprised the temple's structure. When David demonstrated to Solomon the resources he had gathered for the temple, he declared: Onyx stones and inlaid stones, exquisite and varied stones, along with every type of precious stone, and an abundance of marble. The white marble is referred to as Parian marble, named for the island from which it was extracted. The poet describes it thus: ‘Olear, snow-white Paros, and the Cyclades, scattered on the sea, have passed through the waters, tormented by the winds.’
