The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Beda Venerabilis

7th centuryChurch Father

Although the Lord experienced the humiliation and lowliness of humanity for our benefit, presenting Himself as marginalized and the last among the inhabitants of the earth, and instructing His disciples to embody spiritual humility, He did not immediately succumb to death at the hands of those often wicked and unrighteous individuals who conspired against Him. Instead, He awaited the fulfillment of the prophecies. The prophets had the sacred duty to herald the coming of the Savior, and John was one of them, diligently calling on their audiences to abandon sinful ways and embrace righteousness, transitioning from death to life. Christ, in accordance with the prophets who preceded Him, remained among us until the appointed time, when the will of the Father, made known to the faithful through His prophets, was realized in Him.
