The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Chronicles 21:19Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

And as day came after day, and time rolled on, two whole years passed: then after being wasted with a long consumption, so as to void his very bowels, his disease ended with his life. And he died of a most wretched illness, and the people did not make a funeral for him according to the manner of burning, as they had done for his ancestors.

The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

When he passed away, he was not afforded a royal interment. As it is stated, ‘And the people shall not make him to be carried out and burned according to the burning of his fathers, and his burial shall not be in the sepulchre of the king’ (2 Chronicles 21:19, 20). Indeed, it is a terrifying matter to fall into the hands of the living God! Just as His mercy is unfathomable, so too is His discipline severe.
