Question 39. How should we interpret the phrase, "If there be lacking, what have the faithful of Israel laid up" (2 Sam. 20:18)? Sheba’s rebellion against David led him to flee and seek shelter in the city of Abel, located in Palestine. During the siege laid by the army commander, a wise woman from the city reminded him of God’s ordinances. She pointed out that according to divine law, a diplomatic initiative should precede any conflict. She inquired, "How shall you lack what you have stored up for the faithful of Israel?"—implying that they should respect the laws given. She continued, "I am the peaceable one of Israel; why do you aim to destroy the Lord’s treasure?" (2 Sam.

She urged him not to destroy a city of their own tribe, united under the same God. Upon hearing her words, the commander expressed that he desired neither conflict nor siege; all he sought was to apprehend the one who had rebelled against the king. Thus, the wise woman conveyed to the city leaders to avoid risking a war, reminding them of the king’s piety, his courageous actions in battles, and how their lives were safeguarded under his rule.
