Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

He will extend his hand over various nations, and the land of Egypt will not escape; he will seize the treasures of gold and silver, along with all the jewels of Egypt, and will pass through Libya and Ethiopia. This is partially fulfilled, as noted, by Antiochus. However, the additional phrase ‘shall pass through Libya and Ethiopia’ seems more fittingly associated with Antichrist. Antiochus did not actually possess Libya, which is generally understood to represent Africa and Ethiopia, unless it is interpreted to mean that just as there was turmoil in Egypt, which he invaded, so too was there unrest in the surrounding regions, even those distant in the deserts. Therefore, it is not stated that he possessed these lands, but rather that he passed through Libya and Ethiopia.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The Archangel proclaims that he will extend his hand over the territory of Egypt, and the land will not find salvation. This reflects poorly on Antiochus, as he failed to conquer the Libyans, the Ethiopians, or even Egypt itself, retreating instead at the behest of the Romans. The reference here pertains to the three horns that the little horn defeated. He will devastate and conquer the three prominent nations—Egypt, Ethiopia, and Libya—which are likely ruled by three kings.

Hippolytus of Rome

2nd centuryChurch Father

In due time, the Antichrist will rise up and engage in battle, overcoming three of the ten kingdoms through conflict and ultimately destroying them—specifically Egypt, Libya, and Ethiopia. After taking captives and spoils, the remaining kingdoms will yield to him under duress. As he gains dominion over the world, he will grow arrogant and set himself against the Lord. His initial assault will be directed towards Tyre, Veritus, and the adjacent regions.
