But he that will be proud, and refuse to obey the commandment of the priest, who ministereth at that time to the Lord thy God, and the decree of the judge, that man shall die, and thou shalt take away the evil from Israel:

Be diligent to carry out all that is commanded of you, as the prophet states, "For the priest's mouth shall keep knowledge, and the law shall be sought from his mouth" (Malachi 2:7). The priest does not create laws; rather, he reveals the intentions of the Lawgiver, interpreting them with integrity and serving as a fair dispenser of justice, carefully considering each case.

Therefore, it is those who choose to disobey who bear the blame for their disrespect, facing the gravest consequence, death: "Let him die," it is declared, "who shall pay no heed to the priest who stands there in the service of the Lord thy God." Thus, the presence and service of God are of immense significance, and those who fail to honor God's minister are subject to judgment and punishment; those who disregard this Divine authority will face severe repercussions for their contempt. Our Lord Jesus Christ Himself exemplified respect for this law, urging the Jewish people, "The scribes and Pharisees have sat down in the seat of Moses; therefore whatever they command you to observe, observe and do" (Matthew 23:2-3). Consequently, let no one condemn the priest, even if he appears negligent or indifferent in his commitment to the law; instead, let him receive favor when he interprets the law, for he may struggle with personal shortcomings while articulating God's will. Thus, we should not disrespect divine matters because of human failings.

I must refrain from taking my seat before the elder; if I were to transgress, he could hand me over to the adversary to wear down the flesh, so that the spirit might be saved (1 Cor. 5:5). In the ancient covenant, anyone who defied the priests faced stoning by the community outside the camp or paid dearly with their own life for neglecting the sanctity of the priesthood, being struck down by the sword. Today, the one who disobeys is severed by the spiritual sword; or, being cast out from the fellowship, is ravaged by the insatiable teeth of demons.

I must refrain from sitting before the elder; should I transgress, he might hand me over to Satan to afflict the flesh, so that the spirit may attain salvation (1 Cor. 5:5). In the Old Testament, anyone who rebelled against the priests faced stoning outside the community, or had to pay with their own blood for disregarding the priestly authority, being struck down by the sword (Deut. 17:12). However, in the current age, one who disobeys is struck down by the spiritual sword; or, if cast out from the church, is consumed by the ferocious fangs of demons.

Ignatius, the Theotokos, instructs, "Be attentive to the bishop, so that God may also be attentive to you. I am a sacrifice for those who submit to the bishop, presbyters, and deacons. May my inheritance in God be alongside them." And further, "The One for whom I am imprisoned bears witness to me that I received this understanding not from human flesh, but rather the Spirit revealed it to me, proclaiming, 'Do nothing without the bishop.' Therefore we must refrain from undertaking any actions without the bishop. Where a bishop is found, a community must also exist, just as where Jesus Christ is mentioned, there the Church gathers together. It is not simply about where the sheep wander, but where the shepherds guide them.

Those who stray from the flock are vulnerable to wild beasts and become prey for the lost. Consequently, 'It is not permissible to act without the bishop or to observe the Supper of Love; instead, whatever he endorses is commendable to God. Whoever regards the bishop with honor is honored by God; whoever acts covertly apart from the bishop serves the adversary.' It is essential to obey the presbyters also, as they are the apostles of Jesus Christ, our hope, and to seek to please them in all respects, for they are not merely ministers of sustenance, but rather servants of the Church of God, and thus must guard against reproach with vigilance. Honor the deacons as you would Jesus Christ, regard the bishop as you would the Father, and respect the presbyters as the assembly of God, as the band of apostles. Without them, the Church cannot be referred to as such. The Law also affirms this, stating, 'You are to adhere to all that the hierarchs command, so that you do not deviate from the word, neither to the right nor to the left. And anyone who acts out of pride, refusing to obey the sacrifice, let that person perish."
