Cyrill of Alexandria
He also stated: "When you enter into the land that the Lord your God is giving you and take possession of it, settling there, and you say, 'I will appoint a king over me, like the nations around me,' then you shall set a king over yourself whom the Lord your God chooses; from among your own people you shall appoint a king; you must not select a foreigner who is not your brother." We need to distance ourselves as much as possible from serving the creation instead of the Creator, turning our hearts toward the words of truth, and reaching out to the sacred promise of God through faith in Christ. Thus, we establish over ourselves the sovereign and judge, the Son born of God.

Though He takes on humanity, He declares, "I have installed My King on Zion, My holy hill; I will proclaim the decree" (Ps. 2:6-7). Surely, we shall accept no other than Him, nor will we submit to the yoke of outsiders: "Christ is your only Teacher" (Matthew 23:8). Tragically, the Jews remain estranged by their lack of faith and did not acknowledge Christ as their sovereign and judge, even though He came down from heaven at the will and delight of God the Father. Instead, they chose a foreign ruler, the son of perdition, namely, Antichrist, who is not of Israel's lineage, even though the law explicitly stated: "You cannot appoint a foreigner as king over you who is not your brother." They also heard Christ say, "I have come in My Father's name, and you do not receive Me; but if another comes in his own name, you will receive him" (John 5:43), for Christ arrived in the glory of God the Father. However, the son of iniquity will appear not in the glory of God the Father, as the phrase "in the name of the Father" suggests, but as a wretched individual bearing the name of the divine: he will sit in the house of God, "exalting himself as God" (2 Thess. 2:4). Had the Jews truly kept the law, they would not have honored or accepted him as Christ, for the law clearly prophesied that the Messiah would come from Israel's lineage. Yet, they dismissed even this truth, like it had fallen into ruin, and would instead accept one who was a stranger and foreign.
