Deuteronomy 26:14Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

I have not eaten of them in my mourning, nor separated them for any uncleanness, nor spent any thing of them in funerals. I have obeyed the voice of the Lord my God, and have done all things as thou hast commanded me.

The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

"I did not corrupt my affliction through them," for I had no need for remorse when I experienced the goodness of the land; I offered my tithe before I partook. "I did not bring from them when I was impure." I was sanctified when I presented the tithe. "Indeed, I provided from them for the deceased." This reflects the practice of the Gentiles to prepare feasts for those who have passed away.
