Jerome of Stridon
At the conclusion of his journey, Solomon expresses his profound wisdom, through which he excelled beyond all humanity. He reveals that he found the statutes of the ancient law unsatisfactory, so he delved into deeper inquiries. For the sake of educating the people, he crafted parables and allegories that conveyed deeper truths beneath their surface meanings. The Gospels inform us that parables are not to be interpreted solely by their literal definitions; the Lord communicated with the crowd using parables and indirect language, while privately elucidating the meanings to His disciples. This demonstrates that the book of Proverbs does not offer straightforward guidance as the naive might believe. Just as gold lies hidden within the earth and a seed within a hard shell, the divine wisdom contained within these teachings must be sought more profoundly.
