The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

This individual will strike your offspring with a sword, impose watchmen upon you, erect barriers around you, surround you with a trench, construct a palisade encircling you, provide you with arms, and raise a standard in your presence. The term "watchman" refers to the fortifications typically constructed by advancing foes, allowing them to pillage what lay beyond the besieged city and forcing those within to face dire shortages of essential provisions. The term "enclosure" signifies the walls built by the enemy. Furthermore, it is noted that this set of defenses is enhanced by stockades, trenches, and earthen mounds, ensuring that no one would dare to venture outside and making it easy to launch various projectiles into the city.
