Ephraem the Syrian

The hands will grow feeble, preventing the Jewish people from defending themselves or preserving their belongings. All the tribes will find themselves lacking water, meaning they will suffer from the anguish of severe distress. In Hebrew, it states that all the stalks will be saturated with moisture.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

All hands will drop, and water will flow over our stakes. They will dress in their garments, overtaken by dread. Instead of legs soaked with water, the LXX translates it as women will be made unclean by their condition. When the day arrives that all will shake with fear and flee to the mountains, hands will drop, and no one will withstand their foes. Due to deep terror, the knees will be stained, and the bladder will fail to restrain the outpouring. They will be clothed in distress, and fear will grip them entirely. This has been realized not only among the Babylonians but also under the Romans when the wrath of God was unleashed upon them from beginning to end.

Yet, even in our Judea, where the Lord is acknowledged, in times of increased sin and as many become indifferent, all hands engaged in righteous deeds will falter, and there will be an overflow across all the tribes of those who have pursued unlawful relationships, referred to in Scripture as γονορ`ῥύεις—those exposed to the loss of seed. Thus, they must equip themselves with the garments of repentance and heed the impending judgment. Those who do so will be privileged to hear the words from Isaiah: Strengthen the feeble hands and steady the trembling knees.
