The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Upon witnessing the deep affection his father had for him and recognizing his father’s willingness to do anything to fulfill his desires, the son expresses his own sentiments. He addresses Jacob and the maiden's brothers, saying, “If I could but find favor in your sight, I will grant you whatever you ask of me; give me the greatest gift, and I will fulfill any request, provided you allow me to marry the maiden.” This illustrates how the father’s earnest concern leads him to employ strong encouragement, prompting the young man to resolve to take any action to win the maiden’s hand. This intense desire can ensnare an individual, driving them to extremes that lead to spiritual ruin.
