4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

If you find yourself questioning, asking why these matters come your way, consider this: at times, the challenges we face can elevate us, while at other times, they can leave us feeling humiliated and ashamed. In times of distress, we often suffer from the pain of dishonor, much like the woman who acted without regard for modesty. The Prophet leaves no stone unturned in seeking to enlighten them. What will you say after receiving so many calls to action and so many prophetic messages? Do they still not comprehend the reasons behind their circumstances? Indeed, it seems that those who are summoned often prefer ignorance, especially when faced with numerous trials. If you ponder these thoughts internally, you may find it difficult to articulate them.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Due to the abundance of your transgressions, your backside will be exposed, and your feet will face scorching. As the Lord declares, I will raise the hem of your garments and cover your face, revealing your shame. I will expose the feet that have treaded the path of idolatrous folly, placing the fringes of your garments upon your head, leaving you bare before your adversaries, and you will remain vulnerable in your bondage.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

If you find yourself questioning in your heart, “Why has this happened to me?” know that the multitude of your transgressions will lead to the unveiling of your most disgraceful acts, and your feet shall be dishonored. Like the unexpected pain of childbirth, an unforeseen captivity will suddenly come upon you. Should you contend and wonder why you are handed over to your adversaries, understand that it is due to the weight of your iniquities that this has occurred, so that your shame may be exposed, and your unfaithfulness shall be made known, similar to how the garments of an unfaithful spouse are lifted. This illustrates that while our sins remain minor, the Lord demonstrates patience, waiting for our repentance.

However, when we accumulate sin upon sin, our disgrace will be revealed, and our shame laid bare for all to see, whether in this life or in the life to come. For nothing concealed will remain hidden when the prophecy of Daniel is fulfilled: some will rise to eternal life, while others will face disgrace and everlasting contempt (Dan. 12:2).

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Such vulnerability is disgraceful to those who are laid bare. Thus, the Prophet asks, if you are uncovered, did not your transgressions also bring about these misfortunes for you?
