Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Thus says the Lord: If you turn, I will restore you, and you will stand in My presence. If you distinguish the precious from the worthless, you shall become as My messenger. I will make you a fortified wall, strong as bronze, and though they may contend with you, they will not prevail against you, for I am with you to deliver you and to rescue you from the hands of the wicked. It is clear that this message was given not by Jerusalem itself, but through a prophet; to him, the Lord declares, if you guide the people away from sin, I will transform your sorrow into joy, and you will stand before Me as the angels do, always beholding My face. If you separate the precious from the worthless, you will speak as My own voice.

Do not think, He says, that good deeds go unrewarded: if your words can separate some of My faithful from the ranks of sinners, you will be as My mouth and bound to uphold My commands. For My saints will look up to you, rather than you being led by their example. Do not fear, and do not despair, wondering why your suffering seems unending and your wound feels severe and beyond healing; for I will make you a rampart of strong brass, empowering you to resist with all might, and I will stand by you as your help, delivering you from the wicked and redeeming you, either through My blood or by My present assistance. Let us recognize how the words of a teacher are honored when they successfully lead someone away from error, drawing them out from the community of sinners.
