John Chrysostom

For its own sake, this state does not arise from the natural order, but rather from the condition of the spirit. If it is inherently sour, we can discover numerous remedies to counteract it; we can change our environment, seek help from those who possess such remedies, and turn to various alternatives. However, when the very sensitivity has been compromised, all medicine proves ineffective. Thus, it is preferable to possess healthy perceptions than to carry along bitter burdens from the prophets of Jerusalem. Furthermore, he explains that their actions did not merely lead to the city's misfortune; they incurred guilt for the suffering of others as well.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Let us present this witness against those who produce letters filled with falsehoods, dishonesty, and empty promises, aiming to taint the ears of the listeners and mislead the innocent. This fulfills the words written: From the prophets of Jerusalem came forth defilement throughout the whole earth. It is insufficient for them to wallow in their own wrongdoing and to lead their neighbors astray; they strive to spread their slander globally, launching attacks against those whom they previously despised.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Look, I will provide them with affliction and give them the bitter waters to drink, for the prophets of Jerusalem have brought contamination upon the entire land. In this, the Prophet illustrates the numerous disasters affecting everyone. However, he advises the people not to heed the words they proclaim and speaks on God's behalf.
