4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Proclaim throughout Judea. What is this? As previously mentioned, He has warned against the fierce burning of His anger, yet it is clear that it has already been ignited, bringing afflictions upon them. He has brought these troubles to their doorsteps, but they have not been allowed to enter. He does not surrender the cities to destruction, instead leading the adversaries to them, and like a wise instructor, He binds His belt but refrains from inflicting harm. After instilling fear among them, He commanded that news be spread throughout Jerusalem and all the tribes of Judah, urging them to sound the trumpet and alert everyone to the impending assault. They were instructed to flee to the fortified cities, particularly Zion, as it was the strongest of all.

Sound the trumpet throughout the land, that the people may listen, assemble, and take refuge in the strongholds.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Proclaim in Judah and spread the word throughout Jerusalem; raise your voice and call out, sound the trumpet, and urgently declare: ‘Assemble and retreat to the strongholds. Raise a banner toward Zion, flee without delay; for I will bring disaster and severe destruction from the north. Let Judah take heed, let Jerusalem heed this message, the essence of faith that embodies the peace of Christ, as expressed through Isaiah: ‘Climb up to the high mountain, proclaim glad tidings to Zion, raise your voice with power, proclaim good news to Jerusalem,' Isaiah 40:9. Urgently, let a clarion call be made: ‘Let us take refuge in the fortified cities.’ The conflicts stirred up by the heretics are upon us; may the fortresses of Christ provide us refuge!

Elevate the banner of the cross high above, upon the church’s summit; be encouraged, you who are fearful; do not waiver, but seek the assistance of Christ. Calamity, He declares, is coming from the north, along with great devastation—the true Nebuchadnezzar, whom I allow in this world to test your strength and your triumph.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Be devoted to your God through circumcision of the heart. This act signifies the deeper meaning of true circumcision. ‘And circumcise the foreskin of your heart, O men of Judah, and all you inhabitants of Jerusalem.’ It is clear that the external act of circumcision serves as a symbol of the spiritual circumcision that is essential for true devotion, indicating that the physical act is unnecessary when the heart is truly transformed. Awakening to this truth, the apostle addressed the Romans, stating: ‘For he is not a Jew who is one outwardly, nor is circumcision that which is outward in the flesh; but he is a Jew who is one inwardly, and circumcision is that of the heart, in the Spirit, not in the letter; whose praise is not from men but from God’ (Rom. 2:28, 29).

I have also heard the Lord's voice through the prophet, urging, ‘You shall be circumcised to your God, and circumcise the foreskin of your heart, O men of Judah, and you inhabitants of Jerusalem.’ ‘Let not my wrath go forth like fire, and burn so that no one can quench it,’ due to the ‘evil of your deeds.’ For only through repentance can this fire be extinguished. Failing to repent leaves you open to punishment that no one can avert. In light of this, He instructs them to proclaim to Jerusalem and all the tribes of Judah, to sound the alarm, and alert everyone to the impending threat of the enemy, urging them to take refuge in strongholds, especially in Zion, the mightiest of the fortresses. He directed them to act quickly, saying:
