John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Alas for me, for my spirit falters over the fallen. Explore the roads of Jerusalem. Do you notice anything that does not lead you to despair? Observe how God defends Himself and does not leave the search to others. It is you, the afflicted ones, He declares, who must investigate. This duty is entrusted not to another, not to an adversary, nor to one who neglects or disregards your ancestors, but to you, who face toil and hardship. To avoid losing heart again, be vigilant, for troubles are on the horizon, and He commands a diligent inquiry. This refers to those destined for judgment, when there were among them righteous individuals, such as Jeremiah, the sons of Rehab, who were priests, and Abedmelech the Ethiopian. Thus, it speaks of priests, rulers, false prophets, and the people.

but continues to seek a basis for the pardon of transgressions, aiming to eradicate the consequences of divine anger for the benefit of one? For He instructed those who traverse Jerusalem to identify at least one righteous individual within it.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

Explore the streets of Jerusalem, where the needy traditionally gather, and the hills traversed by the affluent: if you encounter a noble who administers justice, or a humble individual who seeks faith—that is, who walks in the path of righteousness and truth—know that you will discover none. This situation clearly indicates a widespread moral decay among the Jewish people at that time. In Sodom, the most wicked of cities, the Lord sought for ten righteous men, yet in Jerusalem, which claims to be the dwelling place of the righteous, He searched for one just man and found no one.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Travel through the streets of Jerusalem, exploring and searching diligently within its roads, and see if you can discover a person who practices justice and seeks faith; then I will show compassion towards Jerusalem. Although some proclaim, “As the Lord lives,” they do so falsely. The depth of love for righteousness is profound: not unlike when God once inquired of Abraham and conveyed that for the sake of ten righteous individuals, He would spare the city (Gen. 18); yet, if Jerusalem, destined for destruction, should still uncover someone who acts righteously and pursues faith (or as Simmachus rendered, truth), He would grant mercy to Jerusalem.

Furthermore, recognizing that there might exist among the people those who feign worship and invoke God’s name insincerely, it is essential to remember that God seeks not hollow declarations but the sincerity of true faith. He asserts: “I delight not in those who invoke My name falsely, but in those whose words reflect the true condition of their hearts.”

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

Explore the avenues of Jerusalem; behold and understand, and search its hills: if you encounter a person there, if you find someone who practices justice and seeks faith, I will extend my mercy to him, declares the Lord. Their iniquity and the Lord's compassion are unmatched. They unite in their rebellion against righteousness, yet the Lord offers grace to all for the sake of even one who adheres to His ways. The command to 'look up, and understand, and search' signifies a thorough examination. They proclaim, 'The Lord lives,' yet they perjure themselves with deceit. What has been expressed previously underscores the Lord's directive not only to invoke His name over idols but to do so in sincerity. The Prophet continues:
