John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The Lord declared, "Because they abandon my law, I will present it before them." He specifies not merely "before their faces," but rather "in their presence," as they witnessed and endorsed what was being spoken. This echoes the wonders that occurred on Mount Sinai. The Greek terms that correspond in the Slavonic Bible regarding "unto me" are not reflected in the Patrology texts.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

Who among the wise can grasp these truths, and who possesses the Word of the Lord, able to proclaim the reasons for the devastation of the earth, which has become barren like a wilderness, with no one able to traverse it? The Lord spoke, indicating that it was because they abandoned the Law I provided, ignored My voice, did not walk in My ways, and instead followed the desires of their own hearts and the idols they learned from their ancestors. The prophet questions whether any wise individuals reside in Jerusalem, those entrusted with God’s Word, who could reveal the divine intention and clarify why Judah has been turned into desolation, leaving it deserted.

The Lord responds, delineating the cause: they rejected His Law, did not listen to His voice, disobeyed His command, and pursued the wicked inclinations of their hearts. Thus, we ought to depend not on our own understanding but upon the Lord. For "the heart is deceitful above all things" (Jeremiah 17:9), and from our hearts emerge evil thoughts (Matthew 15:19). In their pursuit of wrongdoing, they followed the Baals, learned from their forebears. Baal refers to the singular idol of Sidon, while Baals indicates the plural. Therefore, we ought not to repeat the mistakes of our ancestors, but instead adhere to the truths found in Scripture and the commands of God, who builds us up.
