4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

They will consume their words like one bites into an onion, which reflects their adversarial and unyielding nature. Deceit and disbelief became entrenched in the land, saturated with hypocrisy.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

They expressed their words deceitfully, much like peeling an onion, devoid of faith. They boasted in their worldly strength, having emerged from the realm of the corrupt, yet they did not recognize me, declares the Lord. The prophet condemns the arrogance of the affluent and the wickedness embedded in their hearts, as they compound lies upon lies while continually oppressing the vulnerable. Hence, he reveals that they too will face similar oppression, and that following their deliverance from the tribulations of Egypt, they will find themselves taken captive in Babylon.

Jerome of Stridon

4th centuryChurch Father

For they are all unfaithful, a congregation of traitors. They have sharpened their tongues like a bow aimed at falsehood rather than truth. They have fortified themselves in their ways, having turned from wickedness to wickedness, and they have not acknowledged Me, declares the Lord. The wicked transition from evil to evil, swapping one idolatry for another, moving from sin to sin, or from the despair of being besieged to captivity. Concerning the righteous, it is proclaimed, They shall go from strength to strength (Psalm 83:8), while for the unrighteous, it is stated, They have passed from evil to evil.

The cause of all calamities lies in their failure to recognize the Lord; they are a mass of traitors, wielding their tongues like a warrior's bow against blasphemy, and they have reinforced themselves in their ways, believing they can rely on their own worth, hearing the proclamation: you are dust, and to dust you shall return (Gen. 3).

Theodoret of Cyrus

The divine Prophet laments for a source of tears that would be sufficient to express his sorrow, longing to weep day and night for the plight of his fellow countrymen. He desires a hidden sanctuary in the farthest reaches of the wilderness, wishing to dwell there, distant from the wicked acts that the people have dared to commit. He observes that all who conspire to betray marital fidelity form a gathering willing to engage in every form of wrongdoing. This sentiment is captured in Jeremiah 9:2, where he describes a community of wrongdoers.

In Jeremiah 9:3, it is noted that they have unleashed their tongues like a bow, concocting schemes, slanders, and malevolence against one another, signified by the declaration, "Lies, and unbelief are strengthened in the earth: for out of the wicked into the wicked is come forth." This illustrates the persistence of deceit, as one sinful act leads inexorably to another, rooted in their disregard for divine matters. This is further emphasized by the Lord's declaration, “And they knew not me, saith the Lord.” To further illuminate their deception, He advises them not to place their trust in friends or relatives, as they are both treacherous and lacking in sincerity. He also charges them with wrongdoing for accepting bribes in violation of the law.
