Gregory the Great
Oh, if only God would address you and share His thoughts with you! Job 11:5. For a person speaks based on their own understanding, when their thoughts are not influenced by the Spirit of the Almighty, allowing the wisdom of the flesh to engage the senses and guide the mind, which ultimately leads it astray. This is why Truth spoke to Peter, who was still consumed by earthly concerns: for you are not setting your mind on the things of God, but on the things of men, Mark 8:33. Yet, after Peter made a sincere confession, he was told, Blessed are you, for flesh and blood did not reveal this to you, but my Father who is in heaven, Matthew 16:17. When the mouth remains shut, the voice is contained within, and the meanings that are hidden remain unknown to humanity; but when the mouth is opened, words flow forth, and the thoughts of the speaker are made known. Hence, ‘God opens His mouth’ when He makes His will apparent through trials. It’s as if He speaks openly when the curtain of divine Providence is drawn back, revealing His intentions. By keeping silence, He indicates what He chooses to conceal, and through His hidden judgments, He often keeps the reasons for His actions from us. Sophar, in his effort to correct the righteous Job with worldly reasoning, indicates the blessings he wishes for him, even while failing to recognize that they are already present. He laments, Oh, if only God would talk to you and reveal His thoughts! It’s as if he means to say, I pity your lack of understanding more than the suffering you endure, knowing that you are in bondage to earthly wisdom and absent of the Spirit of Truth. For had you perceived God’s hidden judgments, you would not have dared to speak so defiantly against Him. And when the Sovereign God elevates our understanding so that we can glimpse His judgments, He dispels our ignorance swiftly, for His teaching flows from His open mouth, as evidenced by the further words He provides.
