Olympiodorus of Alexandria

6th centuryChurch Father

Elihu seeks to appease his audience after having rebuked them earlier. He refers to them as wise and knowledgeable in righteousness, urging them to listen carefully to his words, as they differentiate between deception and reality.

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

Elihu, believing that Job could not refute the validity of his statements, undertakes a thorough analysis of Job’s claim that the Lord disciplines him without reason. He demonstrates that such a view of God does not align with our understanding of Him as the sovereign Sustainer of the universe. If the Lord were to show favoritism or act unjustly, there would be chaos in creation, and He would not limit the harm caused by those who stray from the truth. God's omniscience, power, and compassion for those wronged affirm His just nature. Consequently, humanity must yield to God's sovereign will. Elihu advises that Job's manner of thinking should be reconsidered in order to provide him with guidance.
