They prepared to engage in combat but soon recognized that their people had valid concerns. Slaying the Philistine civilians would serve no good purpose and would be unfair, as they bore no guilt. After discussing among themselves, the Philistines insisted that the one responsible for the crime be surrendered to them, ensuring that his own kin would not suffer the consequences for his wrongdoing.
