One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

What constitutes uncleanness? It is sin, evil, greed, and deceit. The purifications described in the Old Testament serve as symbols of true cleansing. As stated, when the priest examines living flesh, he will pronounce it unclean; this living flesh signifies uncleanness and is akin to leprosy. Sin, too, manifests in various forms and disparities. This point is further illustrated: if the leprosy covers the entire body, the individual is deemed clean; however, if it is localized to a specific area, the person is unclean. Thus, it is clear that what is considered unclean is characterized by its diversity and variability.
