John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The Holy One, who finds rest in humble and righteous individuals, reveals the gifts of His wisdom when He recognizes the simplicity of those who approach Him. However, when He encounters a soul tainted by sin, He refrains from imparting His blessings and withholds instruction. Consider His words through Moses: If you draw near to Me, I will draw near to you; but if you fail to repent and oppose Me, I will come against you in anger. This is spoken not because the Divine changes His justice, but because the truth does not readily connect with the wicked.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

Through these words, the Lord removes any justification the wicked may have to argue that His threats are unfounded or unfair. The Lord asserts that the responsibility rests solely with them for the dire circumstances they face. If you have strayed from Me and My ways, justice requires that I likewise distance Myself from you and respond to you with severity. The chosen parimia is associated with the celebration of the New Year on September 1st, as the truths it conveys align with the essence of the observance of this feast. It calls for God's blessings upon our endeavors and domestic affairs in the approaching summer. However, the parimia illustrates the conditions under which such blessings can be realized.

The Lord is prepared to bestow His favor on those who genuinely honor Him and ardently seek to follow His commandments. In contrast, we must be wary of His anger and the calamities that accompany it, akin to those threats issued to His chosen people for their unrighteousness. The same parimia should also be recited on June 27th in commemoration of the victory at Poltava. The Church guides us to view this triumph as a manifestation of God's grace, granted in recognition of our faithfulness, humility, and trust in Him, as well as an expression of divine judgment against our adversaries who have forsaken true faith and displayed arrogance. This perspective aligns perfectly with the message of the parimia regarding victories and defeats, wherein the Lord assures victories to the faithful and pronounces threats of defeat upon the wicked and haughty.
