Caesarius of Arles

6th centuryChurch Father

What adversaries could be greater than the devil and his angels? We confront them not only within ourselves but also in the hearts of others, especially when they seek to disturb, attack, or dominate anyone. We drive them away through our admonitions, discipline, or fervent prayer, abiding by divine commandments. Ultimately, the enemy will be overcome by death in our presence. Whose death do we speak of? It is ours, for when we put to death our earthly desires—such as corruption and impurity—and crucify these passions and sins, our adversaries, namely the devil and his angels, will be defeated before us. In what way will they be vanquished? If you are righteous, wickedness will be subdued before you; if you practice self-control, desires will be vanquished; if you are devoted to God, you shall obliterate the spirit of iniquity.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

This passage speaks to the global standing of the Lord's safeguarded elect. Its strength will be so formidable that adversaries, fearing certain defeat, will refrain from launching an assault within its borders. Yet, should they attempt an attack, they will be swiftly repelled, either falling by the sword of their assailants, by one another, or succumbing to self-inflicted harm to evade capture. - Before you in your sight.
