The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

Cyril. Concerning the sheep and the goat, He establishes the same principle; the sacrificial offering made for both is conducted in a similar fashion. The varying sizes of these animals serve as a remarkable reflection of the devotion and reverence of the individuals presenting their offerings. One is plentiful and outstanding, symbolizing great piety, akin to the calf; another is average, represented by the sheep; and yet another is lower still, as the goat is smaller than the sheep. This aligns with the parable in the Gospel, which illustrates how the fruitful soil yields crops in abundance—some a hundredfold, some sixty, and some thirty (Matt. 13:8:23). Palladius. Concord.
