When the tormented man was approached by the malevolent spirits, they recognized Jesus from afar as the Son of God, who possessed authority over them. Realizing their impending judgment from God due to their rebellion against His will, they likely feared immediate retribution. They shouted to Him in protest, suggesting that He had come to afflict them before their appointed time. Clinging to their belief in their premature condemnation, they implored the Lord not to cast them out of that region. To complement Mark’s account, Luke adds that the demons petitioned Jesus not to send them into the abyss, which refers to the vast void where humanity does not dwell.

Lopuchin A.P.

19th centuryCommentator

Upon witnessing the conclusion of their control over the afflicted man, the demons implored Christ to permit them to enter a sizable herd of swine that was feeding on the hillside. These pigs were tended by the Gerasenes, likely intended as sustenance for the nearby Roman legion or perhaps for the local people, who did not adhere closely to the Mosaic law in this distant region.

Michail (Lusin)

19th centuryCommentator

"From that region" - into the depths or Hades (Luke 8:31) - reflects the sorrowful state of a place from which the unclean spirits are so hesitant to leave. In that region, both Jews and Gentiles coexisted, marked by a decline in moral standards.

Paul Matwejewski

19th centuryCommentator

When the man afflicted by demons saw the Lord from a distance, he hurried to Him, bowed in reverence, and cried out loudly, ‘What do we have in common with You, Jesus, Son of God? Have You come here before the appointed time to torment us?’ The demons are aware of their impending judgment and tremble (James 2:19), knowing that their final reckoning awaits them (2 Pet. 2:4; Jude 1:6). Until that day, they act in accordance with their wicked nature, pleading not to be tortured prematurely. According to the revered Theophylact, demons considered their own torment significant, while also fearing that the Lord would soon put an end to their actions. Thus, when Christ commanded the unclean spirit to leave the man, He asked for his name.

The mentally troubled man could no longer assert his identity, so the unclean spirit answered on his behalf, saying, ‘Legion,’ which refers to a contingent of the Roman army, typically numbering around 6,000 soldiers, half of whom were infantry and half cavalry. The demons implored Jesus not to drive them out of that region or into the abyss. Nearby, on a hill, there was a large herd of pigs, likely owned by Gentiles living along the eastern shore of Lake Gennesaret. The malevolent spirits requested, ‘If You are going to cast us out, permit us to enter the herd of swine.’ The Lord Jesus consented immediately, commanding them to go. St. John Chrysostom notes that He granted the demons’ request not due to their persuasiveness but for different reasons—so that the residents of the region would recognize His supreme power, and the wickedness of the demons from which He liberated those afflicted would be more clearly illustrated, showing that they could not even harm the pigs without the Almighty's permission. As the unclean spirits departed from the man, they entered the pigs, and then, in a sudden frenzy, the entire herd of pigs, numbering about two thousand, plunged down a steep bank into the lake and drowned.
