Jerome of Stridon
To all who hear the message of the kingdom yet fail to comprehend - it is vital to pay close attention to the words being conveyed. An evil one comes and takes away what has been planted in his heart: this represents the one who is sown along the path. The one sown on rocky ground is the individual who receives the word with immediate enthusiasm, yet lacks a deep-rooted faith and is swayed by the pressures of the moment. - The wicked one snatches the good seed. It is important to recognize that this seed is sown in the heart, and there are variations in the receptiveness of believers’ souls. When challenges or persecution arise because of the word, he faces immediate temptation. - Note the phrase: immediately tempted. This suggests a distinction between someone who is driven to renounce Christ through intense suffering and someone who, facing the initial wave of persecution, is rapidly tempted and falls away.
