The Church Fathers on this verse

Nehemiah 13:15Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

In those days I saw in Juda some treading the presses on the sabbath, and carrying sheaves, and lading asses with wine, and grapes, and figs, and all manner of burthens, and bringing them into Jerusalem on the sabbath day. And I charged them that they should sell on a day on which it was lawful to sell.

The commandment instructs us to engage in our necessary tasks for six days, reserving the seventh for rest, as indicated in Exodus 20:9-10. The essence of this directive suggests that during this temporal existence, which spans six ages, the faithful are to strive for eternal serenity, anticipating a time—the seventh, if you will—when they shall receive repose directly from the Lord. From a moral perspective, the chosen ones honor the Sabbath in this present life by setting aside worldly concerns at the appointed times to focus on prayer, lifting their thoughts towards the divine. When we perform the essential duties required for our bodily needs in accordance with the law, genuinely and devoid of desires that contradict the Apostle's exhortation (cf. Rom. 13:14), we fulfill the necessary labors of the six days, as we engage with the vital matters of this world.
