4 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Gregory of Nyssa

4th centuryChurch Father

Those who earnestly pursued the priesthood, approximately two hundred and fifty in number, through their fiery trials redeemed their fellow countrymen.

They met their end, consumed by the earth as it opened beneath them, while what was left of that multitude was incinerated by lightning.

Ephraem the Syrian

4th centuryChurch Father

If I were to offer my body to be consumed by flames yet lack love, it would benefit me nothing (cf. 1 Cor. 13:3). A similar fate befell the sons of Korah, as their destruction was not due to a fervent devotion to serving God.

Cyprian of Carthage

3rd centuryChurch Father

Korah, Dathan, and Abiron, who revolted against Moses and Aaron the high priest, sought to seize the rights of sacrifice for themselves, faced immediate divine retribution for their actions. The ground opened and consumed them alive, while the anger of God also struck down the two hundred and fifty others who allied with them, the co-conspirators in this rebellion. This serves as a poignant reminder that any efforts by the wicked to undermine the Divine order are ultimately directed against God Himself.

Cassiodorus the Senator

6th centuryChurch Father

The uprising arose from a sense of entitlement, leading to perilous and disastrous outcomes. This is exemplified in the case of Dathan and Abiron, who incited the people and fervently sought recognition for themselves over Moses and Aaron. Their eventual retribution stemmed from inciting the righteous to anger, fueled by envy, which was known to displease the Lord. Consequently, this event serves to glorify the Lord, who asserts His protection over His servants. The earth opened and swallowed Dathan, while the group of Abiron was engulfed.

As recorded in the Book of Numbers, this occurred publicly for those who, with the venomous sting of envy, sought to seize the grace that had been bestowed upon Aaron and Moses, attempting to obtain honor through discord, which they understood to be a gift from God’s mercy. A similar fate awaited them, as their division stemmed from a single source: the earthly wise were consumed by the earth, thereby reinforcing the idea that their punishment attests to their transgressions.
