To receive favor from the monarch, the wise men declared triumph in all battles and made deceitful assurances that they could overpower their enemies with their enchantments. Similarly, Balak, the king of Moab, sought to achieve this. He offered a bribe to the unscrupulous Balaam and took him to a high mountain, saying, "Come, curse me" against Israel, believing that the spells of the wise men would result in actual events.
