Numbers 6:21Meaning & Commentary from the Church Fathers

This is the law of the Nazarite, when he hath vowed his oblation to the Lord in the time of his consecration, besides those things which his hand shall find, according to that which he had vowed in his mind, so shall he do for the fulfilling of his sanctification.

One Church Father comments on this verse

Cyrill of Alexandria

5th centuryChurch Father

We must honor our commitments to God, and anyone who has made a promise should fulfill it promptly, for it is truly serious and perilous not to do so quickly, as I believe and as the Holy Scriptures confirm. If we rightly perceive it as shameful to be charged with dishonesty, how could it not be disgraceful to make a pledge before the Lord and then break that promise? Thus, the law finds fault with anyone who has vowed and delayed in keeping it, as well as those who disregard their commitments entirely, labeling it as sin. However, it absolves from blame those who possess nothing of their own, being bound by necessary obligations and living under the authority of another.
