The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

A wise individual brings joy to their parents, and if they hold the position of a king, they bring honor to their nation; conversely, a sycophant merely deceives those around him, while a rogue incites turmoil within the city. Even a wise person who partners with a fool cannot find peace, and the unjust continuously face animosity from others. The righteousness and integrity of a leader have repercussions for their closest allies and the well-being of their nation; similarly, the quality of education influences the future of a son, and discipline dictates the conduct of a servant. It is clear that the unjust creates strife among others, diminishes his own worth, and despises his own essence, while the righteous is bestowed with honor and safety through the safeguarding of the Lord. Just as the path of wickedness is detestable to the upright, the righteous are likewise despised by the unjust.
