The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Ireneus (Orda)

19th centuryCommentator

The educator shares with his young followers the prudent advice handed down from his parents, cautioning them against the allure of foreign women, while encouraging them to seek joy and affection within their own households. He emphasizes the importance of doing so without hesitation, as every path of humanity is known to God, and any straying from His commandments will face grave consequences.

Vissarion (Nechaev)

19th centuryCommentator

The Wise Teacher, cautioning his disciple against indulgence, compassionately advises him to steer clear of temptations. This includes refraining from walking close to places associated with vice. Unless absolutely essential, it is wiser to avoid paths near such locations to prevent hearing calls that might entice him, presenting them as harmless distractions. One cannot guarantee their own steadfastness, nor justify yielding to these lures with mere curiosity. In this instance, curiosity is the initial gateway to falling into temptation. It is far better to avoid this path entirely, protecting oneself from sin.
