Andrew of Caesarea

6th centuryChurch Father

God, who desires our salvation, guides and turns all men by blessings and afflictions toward the inheritance of His good things. He sets before us the brightness of the Jerusalem on high and the darkness and terrors of the fire of Gehenna. Thus we may do good while there is time, either from desire for eternal glory or from fear of endless shame.

For this reason it is said of the rejected, who were fearful and weak in the struggle with the devil, that they will be condemned to the second death.

Having appeased by good works the Giver of mercy, who does not desire the death of the sinner but his conversion, may we also receive His gifts. They are deserved not by verbal teachings, but by deeds and sufferings.

For it would have been sufficient for Him simply to promise good things and warn against evils, so that afterward He might honor or punish those worthy of glory or punishment. Yet He also deigned to suffer for us, lest He seem to have neglected anything for our correction and healing.

Therefore let us not receive the grace of God in vain, but through conversion and good works let us attain the promised blessings in Christ our Lord. With Him, to the Father together with the Life-giving Spirit, be glory and dominion, now and ever, and unto ages of ages. Amen.

Oecumenius

But for the fearful, the unbelieving, and those like them, their portion is in the lake that burns with fire. The fearful are those who show weakness toward every good work because voluntary suffering is joined to it. And all deceivers. He did not say liars, but deceivers, that is, those who act contrary to nature and deceitfully present the natural beauty of virtue under the counterfeit and distorted mask of wickedness. In the Synodal translation, and all liars, this nuance of meaning is not distinguished.

God always intersperses gentle, encouraging words with stern ones, in order to move His hearers to watchfulness. So it is also in the one hundred and forty-fourth Psalm. After a long discourse on the grace of the Lord’s mercy, a mention of His strict judgment suddenly appears: “The Lord preserves all who love Him, but all the wicked He will destroy” (Ps 144:20).

He mentions the cowardly beside the unbelieving, because those who doubt that they will attain the reward are afraid to risk entering the contest. “And the portion of all liars is in the burning lake.” The author shows that there are many different liars. Yet the most dangerous and detestable is the one who sins in relation to religion, as was said above: “They say they are Jews and are not, but are a synagogue of Satan” (Rev 2:9).

Tichon of Zadonsk

Lawbreakers who despise the announced royal mercy and become hardened in their wickedness, refusing to abandon evil and destructive deeds, rightly turn royal mercy into great wrath. Once convicted by judgment, they will be punished according to the full severity of the law.

They did not wish to receive the announced royal mercy for their correction and benefit. Therefore they will know his justice and his righteous, avenging hand. Then the king's wrath will burn fiercely against such insensible and ungrateful people.

So too sinners now hear repentance being preached and God's mercy shown to the penitent. But if they do not wish sincerely to turn, abandon sins, and repent, they will know upon themselves His justice and avenging hand instead of God's mercy.

"He will rain snares upon the wicked; fire and brimstone and a stormy wind shall be the portion of their cup" (Ps 10:6).

"But the cowardly, unbelieving, defiled, murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their portion in the lake burning with fire and brimstone. This is the second death" (Rev 21:8).

Then they will truly know upon themselves those fearful threats that they now hear in the holy word of God. They do not wish to know God's mercies shown upon themselves, so they will know His avenging justice.

Now God calls and promises mercy, but then He will send them away from Himself and pour out His righteous wrath upon them. Now He says: "Repent." Then He will say: "Give an answer."

Now He says: "Come to Me." Then He will say: "Depart from Me." Where? "Into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels" (Mt 25:41).

Now He hears those who repent and pray to Him. But then sinners will hear: "I do not know you. You did not know Me, and I do not know you. You did not listen to Me, and I do not listen to you."

"I called, and you did not obey. I stretched out My words, and you did not attend. You rejected My counsels and did not heed My reproofs. Therefore I also will laugh at your destruction. I will rejoice when ruin comes upon you" (Prov 1:24-26).

And again: "I called, and you did not obey. I spoke, and you did not listen, but did evil before Me and chose what was not pleasing to Me. Therefore thus says the Lord God: Behold, My servants shall eat, but you shall hunger. Behold, My servants shall drink, but you shall thirst. Behold, My servants shall rejoice, but you shall be put to shame. My servants shall be glad with gladness of heart, but you shall cry out from pain of heart and weep from contrition of spirit" (Is 65:12-14).

Sinners, let us fear God's prohibitions and repent while repentance is being preached. Let us receive God's mercy with gratitude while it is being shown. Let us turn to God while He calls and waits. Let us pray to Him while He listens to those who pray.

"We are ambassadors on behalf of Christ, as though God were exhorting through us. We beseech you on behalf of Christ: be reconciled to God. For Him Who knew no sin He made to be sin for us, that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. As fellow workers, we also entreat you not to receive the grace of God in vain. For He says: In an acceptable time I have heard you, and in the day of salvation I have helped you. Behold, now is the acceptable time; behold, now is the day of salvation" (2 Cor 5:20-21; 6:1-2).

"Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon yourselves and learn from Me, for I am meek and lowly in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For My yoke is good, and My burden is light," says the Lord (Mt 11:28-30).

"Or do you despise the riches of the goodness, meekness, and longsuffering of God, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? But according to your hardness and impenitent heart, you are storing up wrath for yourself on the day of wrath and the revelation of God's righteous judgment. He will render to each according to his deeds: to those who by patient continuance in good work seek glory, honor, and immortality, eternal life; but to those who are contentious and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath. Tribulation and distress upon every soul of man who does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Greek" (Rom 2:4-9).

It happens that a man warns another man who is going toward some danger, saying: "Where are you going? Trouble awaits you there." So the holy Christian books warn and restrain the unreformed sinner who is rushing toward destruction, saying: "Poor sinner, where are you going? Trouble awaits you there."

Where are you going? What trouble can be greater than eternal destruction and eternal death? For just as the only true good is eternal good, so the only true evil is eternal evil.

Where are you going, poor sinner? To destruction.

Fornicator, adulterer, and lover of impurity, where are you going? To destruction.

Malicious man, breathing vengeance against your brother and defiling your hands with human blood, where are you going? To destruction.

Thief, predator, and robber, where are you going? To destruction.

Slanderer, reviler, evil speaker, and foul-mouthed man, where are you going? To destruction.

Drunkard and every disorderly person, where are you going? To destruction.

Schemer, flatterer, and deceiver, where are you going? To destruction.

Negligent and scandal-giving pastor, where are you going? To destruction. You are going to destruction and dragging many with you, many for whom Christ shed His Blood.

Judge, perjurer, and bribe-taker, where are you going? To destruction. By your example you are laying the same path for the servants subject to you.

Ruler who serves your own whims and not society, and seeks your own profit and not the common good, where are you going? To destruction.

Landowner who torments or burdens your peasants, where are you going? To destruction.

False merchant who sells a cheap thing as dear, a bad thing as good, and a rotten thing as sound, where are you going? To destruction.

Hired laborer who receives a worthy wage but does not work, or works hypocritically, where are you going? To destruction.

Lover of money who withholds the wages of the hired man, where are you going? To destruction.

Sorcerer, and you who summon him to help you, where are you going? To destruction.

Every unreformed and unrepentant sinner, where are you going? To destruction.

The life of every man, as long as he lives in this world, is his path. As the life is, so is the path. As he lives, so he goes. Whatever life he has, by that path he goes.

He goes either toward eternal blessedness or toward eternal destruction. If he lives piously in Christ Jesus, he walks by the pious path and goes into eternal life. If he lives lawlessly, he walks by the path of lawlessness and goes into eternal destruction.

Ah, he is going to destruction. The one for whom Christ died is going, and he will perish if he does not return.

Poor sinner, restrain yourself while you are still on the path. Return while you have not yet perished. Once you perish, you will not come out. Forever, like a dead man, you will remain in destruction and eternal death.

Turn back. Christ the Lord, Who suffered and died for you, calls you back and summons you to repentance. "I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance" (Mt 9:13).

Turn and stand on the path of repentance, the path that leads to eternal life. Walking on it, you will end your life blessedly and enter eternal life.

"Do not be deceived: neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor the effeminate, nor men who lie with males, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor robbers will inherit the Kingdom of God" (1 Cor 6:9-10).

"But the cowardly and unbelieving, the defiled, murderers, fornicators, sorcerers, idolaters, and all liars shall have their portion in the lake burning with fire and brimstone. This is the second death" (Rev 21:8).

"Come to Me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest" (Mt 11:28).

Borodin P.M.

19th centuryChurch Father

St. Andrew explains this as follows. He who conquers in the war against the invisible demons, and who overcomes all the passions and snares of the devil, will receive all these blessings, having become a spiritual son of God. But all the cowardly, and those who lack courage in the struggle against the devil, will be cast into the lake of fire unto the second death.

Thus the saint of Caesarea continues: “God, who desires our salvation, turns us all toward the inheritance of His good things by both pleasant and grievous means. He sets before us the brightness of the Jerusalem on high, and the dark and sorrowful straitness of the fire of Gehenna. Thus we may do good while there is time, either from desire for eternal glory or from fear of endless shame.”

By liars, the interpreters understand people who, proceeding from purely earthly interests, knowingly present falsehood as truth.
