The Church Fathers on this verse

9 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

“Greet those who love us in the faith,” he says either of those who love him, or generally of the believers. “Grace be with you all. Amen.”

Theophylact of Bulgaria

11th centuryChurch Father

“All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.” Or else, those who love him faithfully and without hypocrisy. Or, those faithful ones who love him, that is, Christians. “Grace be with you all. Amen.” He prayerfully wishes that the gift of God may be preserved in them, or that love for mankind may always remain with them, preserving them by grace. Or, may grace always remain with them, who need it most of all, guarding both their souls and bodies in the Holy Spirit. To Him be glory unto the ages. Amen.

Theodoret of Cyrus

5th centuryChurch Father

The teacher of truth did not wish to be loved in any other way, but only with a pious purpose. “Grace be with you all. Amen.” The divine Apostle wrote this to blessed Titus, yet he also gave to all of us the benefit contained in it. For we too draw this wealth from it as from common treasures. May God grant us also to preserve what has been gathered in Christ Jesus our Lord. With Him, to the Father, together with the All-holy Spirit, be glory, honor, and dominion, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen. The Epistle to Titus, bishop of the Church of Crete, was written from Nicopolis in Macedonia.

Euthymios Zigabenos

11th centuryChurch Father

“All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith.” Greet those who love us in the name of faith, as those of one faith with us. Or greet them because they abide in the faith together with us. “Grace be with you all.” This is the good pleasure of God and His protection. Or else, it is the grace of the Holy Spirit, which each receives through holy Baptism. “Amen.” Truly may it be with you all.

Ivanov A.V.

19th centuryChurch Father

“Grace be with you all.” This indicates that the Epistle was addressed not to Titus alone, but also to the other believers.

The afterword contains the Apostle’s instructions: concerning Titus’s arrival to him in Nicopolis, concerning Zenas the lawyer and Apollos, and the concluding greetings.

Nikanor (Kamenski)

19th centuryChurch Father

The greeting to all and from all is significant, as is the prayerful blessing.

Besides the persons mentioned above in verse 12, Titus knew who could greet him together with Paul, that is, Paul's honored fellow workers. Therefore this greeting was dear to him, and to all those whom he shepherded.

They loved the laborers of Christ out of love for the faith.

Paying special attention to this love in faith, blessed Jerome wrote: "Mothers also love their children, even to the point of being ready to die for them, but they do not love in faith.

"Wives also love their husbands, but this love is not from faith.

"Only the love of the saints loves him in faith. Even if the beloved is among unbelievers, the saint loves him in faith, according to the word of Scripture: 'Love your enemies' (Lk 6:35)."

"The Apostle prayerfully wishes grace to the believers, and this, of course, had its effect if those blessed showed themselves to be as the one blessing desired them to be" (blessed Theophylact).

"Grace be with you all. Amen.

"The divine Apostle wrote this to blessed Titus, but he also provided for us all the benefit contained in it. For we too, as from common treasuries, draw wealth from it.

"May God grant us also to preserve what has been gathered concerning Christ Jesus our Lord. With Him, to the Father, together with the All-Holy Spirit, be glory and honor and dominion, now and always and unto the ages of ages. Amen" (blessed Theodoret).

The Apostle concludes his Epistle with instructions to Titus and greetings to him from his fellow workers (vv. 12-15). Zenas the lawyer (nomikos), mentioned here, had probably been occupied with the study of the Law of Moses before his conversion to Christ.

Theophan the Recluse

19th centuryChurch Father

"Those who are with me" are fellow workers in the work of preaching, known to Titus and friendly toward him.

The Apostle says this both to satisfy custom and, at the same time, to testify to Titus's dignity. "He is such that he has deserved the love of all who are with Paul. It is great praise for Titus to be greeted by all through Paul" (blessed Jerome).

"Greet those who love us in the faith." This means "either those who love us faithfully and without hypocrisy, or those faithful, that is, Christians, who love us" (blessed Theophylact).

Blessed Jerome understands it thus: those who love us in the spirit of faith, or by the power of faith.

"If everyone who loves loved in faith, and there were no others who love without faith, the Apostle would never have added faith to love, saying, 'Greet those who love us in the faith.'

"Mothers also love their children, even to the point of being ready to die for them, but they do not love in faith. Wives also love their husbands, but this love is not from faith.

"Only the love of the saints loves in faith. Even if the beloved is among unbelievers, the saint loves him in faith, according to the word of Scripture: 'Love your enemies' (Lk 6:35).

"The saint loves his enemies, and therefore loves in faith. For he believes Him who promised to repay the fulfillment of His commandment with a merciful reward."

Ambrosiaster adds: "The Apostle marks as worthy of his greeting those who love him out of love for Christ our Lord."

Finally, giving the last blessing, the Apostle says: "Grace be with you all."

"He prayerfully wishes that the gift of God may be preserved in them, or that God's love for mankind may always remain with them, preserving them by grace and in grace.

"Or else, may grace always remain with them, especially since they need it, protecting both their souls and their bodies in the Holy Spirit" (blessed Theophylact).

"As the other Apostles, according to the Lord's word, said on entering a house, 'Peace be to this house' (Mt 10:12), and if the house was worthy, their peace rested upon it.

"But if it proved unworthy, it returned to those who wished to bless it.

"So now Saint Paul prayerfully wished grace to the believers. This, of course, together with the prayerful good wish, had its effect if those blessed showed themselves to be as the one blessing desired them to be."

Let us add the words of blessed Theodoret, with which he concluded his interpretation of this epistle.

"The divine Apostle wrote this to blessed Titus, but he also provided for us all the benefit contained in it. For we too, as from common treasuries, draw wealth from this.

"May God grant us also to preserve what has been gathered concerning Christ Jesus our Lord. With Him, to the Father, together with the All-Holy Spirit, be glory, honor, and dominion, now and ever and unto the ages of ages. Amen."
