In the endeavor to elevate the new tabernacle at Jerusalem to the sacred status of God's temple, the Ark of the Lord was to be transported within it. David, accompanied by the assembly of the people, journeyed to Cariathiarim, where an error occurred in this sacred undertaking. In violation of divine decree, which stipulated that only the high priest and priests were permitted to handle the Ark, and that it must be veiled and carried by the Levites upon their shoulders, the Ark was instead placed upon a cart. While traveling, due to an uneven stretch of ground, a Levite named Uzza, instead of steadying the cart, mistakenly reached out to touch the Ark itself.
