Beda Venerabilis
The name Jonathan translates to “gift of the dove.” His youthful squire receives instruction from teachers blessed with the Spirit's grace. Their followers don spiritual armor, not that of the flesh, but one robustly forged by God. The youth of these disciples is revitalized like that of an eagle. The day they engage in battle against the assaults of their foes represents a moment when they are inspired by the heavenly light. On a notable occasion, Jonathan summons his squire to accompany him on a mission against the enemy stronghold and to launch an attack on the camp of the Philistines. Indeed, every exemplary teacher, endowed with divine grace, encourages the hearts of the faithful toward a decisive triumph over sin.

Jonathan was preparing to confront the forward detachment of the Philistines at the pass of Michmas, yet he kept his plans hidden from his father and the general public. It is entirely appropriate and beneficial to seek the counsel of those who are spiritually mature, but discretion is equally important when sharing intentions with those who lack spiritual insight, particularly in the early stages of an endeavor. This precaution helps ensure that their fear does not deter our fragile and developing aspirations. We also wish to avoid drawing attention to our plans, as their imitation without readiness could hinder the mission. Moreover, their premature admiration could jeopardize the spiritual integrity of our undertaking, as evidenced by the fact that Saul and his company near Gibeah had not yet attained spiritual maturity through the cultivation of virtues.
