2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Saul, found guilty of neglect and violation of the law, could not clear himself through any other justifications. A defense in one matter does not absolve one from accountability in others. If we are to conduct ourselves with integrity in all things, we must also seek to be vindicated in the accusations made against us, whether by demonstrating our innocence or by committing not to repeat the wrong if confronted. However, if he has indeed committed the act and chooses to conceal it without confessing, speaking falsely instead, it is clear that he has transgressed and is aware of his wrongdoing.

John Cassian

5th centuryChurch Father

In the end, because he had never possessed true discernment, he, who initially earned the right to govern all of Israel through divine guidance, was banished from the kingdom like darkness expelled from a vibrant body. Misled by the shadows and false brilliance of that light, he believed that his offerings were more pleasing to God than following the command of Samuel. By the very action he thought would gain him God's favor, he transgressed.
