Athanasius the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Saul, who faced charges for neglecting and violating the law, found no advantage in offering various excuses. Justification in one area does not absolve one from guilt in other matters. If we are to conduct ourselves with integrity and righteousness in every situation, we must also be vindicated regarding the accusations against us. This can be achieved either by demonstrating our innocence or by promising, in the face of reproof, that we do not resort to such actions now or in the future. However, if he has indeed committed the act and chooses to hide it rather than confessing, while speaking contrary to the truth, it clearly shows that he has sinned and is aware of his wrongdoing.

John Cassian

5th centuryChurch Father

Ultimately, because he had never possessed true clarity, he, who originally earned the right to govern all of Israel by divine design, was expelled from the kingdom as something undesirable expelled from a healthy organism. Misled by the shadows and illusions of that false light, he concluded that his offerings were more pleasing to God than adherence to Samuel's directive. In the very action he believed would secure God's favor, he fell into sin.
