John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

He presented a second option; however, it was not the one he sought. He presented a third; again, it was not that one. A fourth, a fifth, and a sixth were offered, but none matched what he desired. The line of sons had been exhausted, and the one he was searching for remained absent. "Do you have another son?" Samuel inquired. The father felt a sense of shame. "There is one more," he replied, "a shepherd who is small and not deserving of attention."

Therefore, do not belittle a young man, nor exalt an elder; for virtue and vice do not hinge on one’s age but rather on the condition of the soul. If you are vigilant, youthful immaturity will not hinder you; conversely, if you are negligent, you will gain nothing from advanced years. True old age is not determined by gray hair but by the virtue within the soul. Just as David, despite his youth, attained the mature rewards of virtue.
