The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The outsider, observing the frailty of his opponent, sought to humiliate the righteous one and initially assaulted him with taunts, as though he were an inexperienced youth. When he noticed David approaching with a shepherd’s bag and merely stones, he proclaimed something like, "Do you believe you are once again tending to sheep, pursuing mere dogs? How can you dare to confront me with such feeble armaments?" He arrogantly exclaimed that the forthcoming confrontation would reveal to him that he was up against more than just an ordinary foe. With these boastful remarks, he advanced swiftly, clashing his armor and raising his weapon. Thus, one came forth in confidence of his might, while the other stood firm in faith and divine assistance.
