The Church Fathers on this verse

One Church Father comments on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

The outsider, observing the frailty of his era, belittled the upright man and initially confronted him with taunts, treating him as though he were merely an ineffective youth. Upon noticing David approach him with just a shepherd’s pouch and stones in hand, he mocked him, questioning whether he believed he was once again tending sheep and chasing off mere dogs. He scoffed at David’s choice of weaponry, dismissing it as inadequate for someone who dares to confront him. He proclaimed that soon enough, experience would reveal to David that he faced more than just an ordinary adversary. With such arrogant declarations, he rushed forward, rattled his armor, and brandished his weapon, embodying confidence in his martial power, while the other stood firm, fortified by faith and divine assistance.
