Due to the father's negligence in correcting his errant sons, the patience of God was provoked to such indignation that when the enemy rose up, his sons were slain in a single day during battle, resulting in the entire nation’s defeat. Many fell, and an unprecedented event occurred involving the sacred ark of God's covenant. This ark, which was forbidden to be touched by the Israelites, even by the priests at times, and which no earthly place could hold, was improperly handled by wicked hands and placed in idol temples rather than the Holy Sanctuary. One can only imagine the scorn and derision the foreigners expressed toward the name of God!

Furthermore, Eli himself, as recorded, met a sorrowful end after hearing the dire prophecy that even his lineage would be stripped of the priestly honor; this prophecy came to pass. Such was the fate of the people! The father, who had never been reproached in his own conduct and who diligently admonished his sons against their wrongdoing, declaring, "Do not do this, my children, for the report I hear about you is not good," nonetheless failed to exhibit sufficient zeal in correcting them. He emphasized the seriousness of their sins in even stronger terms, stating, "If a man sins against another, they shall pray to God for him. But if a man sins against the Lord, who shall intercede for him?" Yet, since he did not take the necessary actions against his sons, the tragic events unfolded as described. The Old Testament contains many instances of similar judgments for various forms of disobedience.
