The subsequent statements pertain to the household of Elijah, to whom these words were directed: "All the offspring of thy house shall die in middle age. And this is the sign which shall follow with thy two sons, Ophni and Phinehas: they shall both die in the same day." This sign indicated the removal of the priestly office from his lineage. Through this event, a transformation in the priesthood of Aaron's family was anticipated. The demise of his sons symbolized not merely the loss of individuals but the end of the priestly line of Aaron's descendants.
