John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

Did the pagan seers thus convey the truth? Certainly not, yet through their own words, the Lord reproved and corrected them. This was also the situation with the sorceress at Endor; since Saul placed his faith in her, God disclosed to him through her what awaited him in the future.

For it is not I, St. John asserts regarding my role as a servant, who grants peace, but rather it is Christ who chooses to speak through us. Although we might have been strangers to grace at any other moment, we are now recipients of it for your sake. If the grace of God, in accordance with His providential plan, worked on behalf of the Israelites through a donkey and through the sorceress, it is assured that it will also choose to operate through us.

Let no one declare that I am lacking in worth or perfection, and may all hear me with care. I too am among those through whom the grace of God expresses itself. The presence of God is typically constant in such individuals, serving the needs of many. In matters of spiritual authority, whatever form it may take, the grace of God is perpetually active; otherwise, all would be lost. However, if a person relinquishes this grace, they will face the gravest consequences, whether upon leaving this world or even immediately thereafter. Do not assume that I speak these words of my own accord. The grace of God can also operate through the unworthy, not for our own sake, but for you.
