The Church Fathers on this verse

2 Church Fathers comment on this verse

John Chrysostom

4th centuryChurch Father

It is remarkable that upon hearing of Saul’s demise in battle, he tore his garments, covered his head with dust, and wept as a father would grieve for his sole beloved child. He called out his name incessantly, crafted a poignant song in his praise, wept profusely, refrained from food until the evening, and lamented the locations stained by Saul’s blood. Now, let each individual, while their spirit is still aflame with grief, recall their adversary and the one who has caused them harm. They should care for that person in life and mourn them in death. Should it be necessary to endure hardships so as not to bring pain upon their wrongdoer, let them bear all trials and perform all actions, trusting in a grand reward from the Lord.

Basil the Great

4th centuryChurch Father

Saul is grieved for as a sinner who has passed away, while Jonathan is remembered as a loyal companion who shared a deep bond with him throughout his life. Discourse 4, on thanksgiving
