Indeed, I assert that the holy ones mourn for the transgressions of humanity. Similarly, David grieved over the downfall of the mighty, asking, “How have the mighty fallen? Do not announce it in Gath; do not let it be heard in the streets of Ascalon, lest the daughters of the Philistines rejoice, lest the daughters of the uncircumcised triumph.” Truly, the mighty have fallen, and the vessels of the defiled have been shattered, which should move us to tears. Let us now consider the theme of patience.

What is the significance of the statement, “Take heed, O Israel, to ponder upon your deceased who are afflictions?” It is important to understand that the defeat referenced is not trivial or commonplace; rather, reflect on those who have perished: who are they? The monarch, the offspring of the king, the mighty among the warriors.
